Hiring from the EU is changing - read on to find out how this can affect you
Thinking of hiring from the EU?
The way you hire from the EU is changing from 1st January 2021. You will need to be a registered licensed sponsor in order to hire eligible candidates from outside the UK.
Free movement is ending as the new points-based system introduces job, salary and language requirements. This new system treats EU and non-EU citizens equally and you will need a sponsor licence to hire eligible candidates from outside the UK.

Who can I hire with a sponsor licence?
A sponsor licence will enable you to hire employees from anywhere in the world, so long as the job you are offering meets the minimum skill & salary thresholds:
- The new minimum skill level of RQF3 (equivalent to A level)
- The new minimum salary threshold of £25,600 or the ‘going rate’, whichever is higher, if the role is on the shortage occupation list.
- The applicants must meet the English language requirements.
I already hire EU citizens / I am an EU citizen working in the UK - what will change?
The new system will not apply to EU citizens already employed in the UK before 31st December 2020. Moving forward, all EU citizens will thereafter be subjected to the new points-based system.
If an EU citizen (and their family) can demonstrate that they were living in the UK before 31st December 2020, they can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme. The deadline to apply is 30th June 2021.
